2 acts 110 minutes including 15 minute intermission
Norman Foster is the most produced playwright - 45 scripts. "The Love List" concluded 10th April at the Playhouse.
This play was first produced at the Piggery Theatre in North Hatley, Quebec in 1989. Cast of 8.
During the opening night of a new play, there's more action in the audience than on the stage.
This play for me took a while to connect although lots of laughter from the large audience. (First time I've seen people in the balcony) Towards the end of the 1st act it really started to gel. The 2nd act developed and it just expanded to the end.
A notable performance by the 2 who played the Tisdale couple (Helen Volkow and Pat McDermott).
Unfortunately I can't go again but people I know are.
For you who haven't been to the Metro (I have season tickets) it is a great theatre. The licensed lounge upstairs (next to the 2 row balcony seating area) is one of the most beautiful I've seen and not just for a theatre. Many great pictures to view.
From downtown it's about 35 minutes on the #10 which stops 10 metres from the door. Coming back is a short walk to the other side. It's not worth taking the Canada Line. Short walk W to the Fraser Arms Hotel/lounge.
Oh, what a night!Opening Night was a delightful presentation of emotional issues couples face from early years through late years, all in the context of an accidentally comical theatrical performance.Norm Foster’s script is very good, of course, but delivery is critical:all the actors did a terrific job!Special kudos go to Helen Volkow (Ruth), perfectly underplayed and so ‘real’, evoking both tears and laughter in generous quantity.Let’s get the word out, and pack the place for the remainder of the run!
Adam Abrams was at the opening night of OPENING NIGHT by Norm Foster and also, had seen the Vancouver Playhouse's production of Norm Foster's A LOVE LIST. Here is his review of both productions:
What happens when you get a cutting edge director, a cutting edge leading man, a strong supporting cast and a piece of theatre that uses blatant devices and has certain flaws in its writing?
You get a decent night out with a particularly strong second half, when the truth in the emotional display by Johnny Gingell (his trademark), and the strength of Sue Sparlin as the classic wingy mother, as well as a clear strong delivery from Harry Seddon as Dad, makes it all worth the effort and the cost. I'm so glad I went.
Have you ever read a review of a show you've seen that you don't agree with? Are there times when you think a critic has been overly critical of a performance that you thought was fantastic? Or a review that has raved about how wonderful a show was that you thought was downright boring? Well, a review is really the opinion of one person, plain and simple. We all have opinions and sometimes they can run the gambit to extreme opposites.
Well now's your chance!!We would love to hear YOUR review of any of the Metro Theatre productions you come and see.The time has come where you can now write a review, tell us what you thought of the show, the sets, the lighting, the experience you had from the moment you arrived at the theatre until the show was over! And it is so easy to do!
Write your review and send it in an email to reviews@metrotheatre.com. Your review will be published here, on Metro Theatre's blog area.
We look forward to hearing what you have to say and sharing it with our audience and web readers!
Hello everyone!! Welcome to Vancouver's own Metro Theatre's new upgraded website! This is all very exciting for us and we are still doing some touchups, making sure the wallpaper is sticking, the blinds are hung just so and, generally speaking, getting used to our new home! The website has been moved to bigger, faster more secure servers, which is pretty darn exciting for us! Along with the upgrades, have come some new features, including this one you are reading right now... Metro Theatre's very own Blog!! Yes, Metro Theatre is one of the first (if not THE first) theatre in the Lower Mainland to have a blog on their website.
I will be using this blog to babble (as I am known to do) and keep you informed of what new features I stumble upon on the website, or if we add new ones, or just news in general
Right now, I must warn you all that while the website settles into it's new home, you may stumble on something that is not quite working yet. We are aware of it and over the next while we will be getting things up and running. A little note to you all... once we have the "Registration" feature working, you will want to register yourselves again, even if you only recently registered yourself on the old site. There will be some features which you will only have access to if you are registered to the site, like the Library. Right now, it is not a huge thing because we don't have many files loaded into the library, but over time we will see if we can get more information stord there.
Likewise, when we have the Metro Forum set up... this will be an online Forum, like a bulletin board, which will be open to all registered users of the website. This is a great place to come talk about shows, what others are doing, and just keeping in touch with friends.
I am hoping you all will come back and check out our site as we get it set up and full of information!
